Newarthill Medical Practice

Non-NHS services

The NHS does not pay for some of the services we provide. These include private sick notes, insurance forms, HGV medicals, holiday cancellation forms, medical reports, fitness to travel certificates, private prescriptions, passport signing and some vaccination services.

The practice adheres to best practice and the British Medical Association’s (BMA) guidance on non-NHS reports.  The BMA recommends that GPs tell patients in advance if they will be charged, and what the fee will be for services not covered by the NHS.

Please speak to the Practice Manager for further information.

Examples of non-NHS services for which GPs can charge their own NHS patients are:

  • accident/sickness certificates for insurance purposes
  • pre-employment medicals, as requested by employers.

Examples of non-NHS services for which GPs can charge other institutions are:

  • reports for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) in connection with disability living allowance and attendance allowance.
  • medical reports for local authorities in connection with adoption and fostering
  • reports for insurance companies
